Elliot & the Bots
For Mason (5.6.11 to 3.9.18)
Background: At the age of 4, my brother Mason was diagnosed with leukemia. Because of his chemotherapy treatments and often too weak immune system, he had to miss a lot of school, sometimes weeks at a time. But even though he had to deal with all the terrible things that comes along with cancer, he was still a happy little kid who loved to play house with his stuffed animals. I’ve never read a children’s picture book that had a main character that was sick and where being sick was not the main focus. Kids with illnesses are still kids. They deserve to have fun and to have someone to relate to, even if it is a hard subject to talk about.
Objective: Elliot & the Bots was created to show kids that when there are obstacles in their life, whether it be a health issue or not, there is a good solution, you just have to be a little creative.
What I Accomplished: Create the characters and character book • Write the story • Illustrate the book and bind it • Make the display classroom including: Nickel the stuffed animal-bot, character cut outs, pictures, posters, coloring sheet, alphabet worksheet, backpack with buttons, and business cards
Programs Used: Illustrator and InDesign
